I totally agree on your story, I also used to be a fanatic atheïst, probably just like your boyfriend, but worse, I actually became very agitated against religion, seeing the pain and wars it has caused in history.
But later I started to understand the wholesome picture of life, humans, and the way the world works, and started to understand that its more complicated than just the pain it has caused.

So.. after a while I got more sympathy for faiths (not really religion). I first thought about becoming a catholic, but after a while I resigned that idea, and found my faith in Taoïsm, an old Chinese life philosophy.

And now I've got great sympathy for people who believe in something, but dislike people who let their lives be ran by religion.

There needs to be a balance.

:) Great to read your piece.

Hello,

Talk about a small universe. :) If I recall correctly, when I was interacting with ABIL (Arizona Bridge to Independent Living) I met some people from your organization - ADAPT. Interestingly enough, there was one person who had CP and she was in a wheelchair. Then again, we're talking over 10 years ago.

Back to your post, I do agree with you that there has to be more than just secular groups speaking out on the issues of disability right. Though I have done some self advocacy and have connected with ABIL & ADAPT, I haven't gone gung ho. By the way, I'm visually impaired with a hearing impairment; so I do know of the struggles.

Right now, I am writing for my blog site: Inspiration Point with the goal of encouraging and inspirational stories. Not surprisingly enough, I do have some disability related posts and one you'd enjoy - I think. It has to do with Escaping the Bubble. :)

Have a blessed day.

Thank you so much for this. I've been grappling with an onset of distaste with religion lately, even though I seek God. I am happy with the tasks he has placed in my life. I am happy with the people he has placed in my life. Truth be told, my boyfriend is athiest, but he is supportive of my faith because he sees that I've changed for the best because of it, and am striving to be everything I don't like about Christians/Christianity.

I am beginning to feel that the actual practice of religion is becoming a bane to society, mainly because of what people do with it, rather than what those people allow faith to do to their hearts.

Another thing you forgot to mention as far as religious practices is choices in politics. Many people believe that voting republican/conservative makes them more Christian than, say, independents, green party members, or those "godless" democrats. This is what pushed me over the edge, I think.

Gathering my own bearings, while anxiously editing my first post... I stumbled across your diary.. Half-asleep, and looking for an 'Echo.

Must confess I cannot 'Speak to facing life within the physical challenge; such as your own. But have always tried to be an Advocate for civil rights... and would welcome sharing with you, as you find time
